March planting ...

To some it's the space between the planting that matters .

A beautiful day to be grubbing between all the planting in what was the lawn, the last of the lawn to go.

Rain day...

I'm convinced a day out in this constant drizzle will make all the difference.

Santa Rosa Plum ..

With so much newly emerging from the ground at the moment. I could almost forget to enjoy the Plum in full bloom.
And this year I won't forget to thin those plums  out. Last time a  heavily laden  limb snapped in the heavy June rains.  And now it has an ugly big scar. Which is why I have kept the stick holding up the lower branch.

A bloom…at last

I remember planting these Erythronium bulbs , many years ago. I was looking forward to many multiplying clumps . I planted two : 'Pagoda' and this one 'Dens -canis' .
'Pagoda' bloomed the first year and every year since  but never really flourished.
Dens-Canis would always appear with it's mottled little leaves ,but never a bloom..
Last year I dug the bulbs up and plopped them  under a fat clump of Hellebores.  Still no blooms. But, as I was cutting the old foliage from the Hellebore , what should appear ….these sweet blooms!

That time again

My little propagating corner is open for business again .  Much earlier this year , thanks to all this spring like weather.  The seedlings popped up in no time at all. Too many in fact. I knew I'd sprinkled too heavily. Now I'll have hundreds of tiny spindly seedlings to transplant in a few weeks.
